Google Analytics WTF – Showing completely wrong data early in the day

For Email It In I use Google Analytics to track usage and signups. GA is used by thousands of web sites around the world. But sometimes it just shows completely the wrong data.

Now I’m not talking about the issue that people with Javascript turned off don’t register as traffic. That’s commonly documented in lots of places. I’m referring to this:

Here’s when I first logged in this morning (screenshot taken at 9:48am):

It is telling me I had about 60 visitors and 19 signups yesterday (July 23rd). That’s GREAT! But didn’t seem to match my database query on the site…

Then when I refreshed at 10:51am:

A more reasonable (and realistic) 28 visitors and 9 signups.

So WTF google? How can you get it so wrong and different only an hour apart? The data wasn’t changing…

  1. I’m fairly certain GA uses predictive analytic in the reports until they process the logs and process the actual numbers… so if you were trending up at 9:45 they would guess the traffic and by 10:50 have actual numbers.
